Those Nervous Animals
Back in the heady days of 1984 a new Sligo rock band by the name of Those Nervous Animals faced a dilemma. Should they save to buy a Public Address system or should they do a recording of some of their songs? They opted for recording and when producer Bill Whelan heard their demos they recorded a tune called The Business Enterprise (My Friend John), which still resonates in the public consciousness today. The song was recently included by Tom Dunne of Today FM in his Tom Dunne’s Top 30 Irish Singles Volume Two, an album which topped the charts in recent years.
The Animals were a Sligo band making big noises in the mid 80’s. They played dancey funky music, most of it original. Altogether Those Nervous Animals released 6 singles, How Does The Shopper Feel, Damien, Just What The Sucker Wanted, Rocket Ship as well as Hyperspace (limited edition) and My Friend John. There was a mini-album called Hyperspace. The recordings were good, but most commentators seemed to agree that the Animals were best appreciated in the flesh, live on stage.
Backwater Jack
BackWater Jack are a high-energy, funky six-piece band, delivering an eclectic mix of soul, rock’n’roll & classic pop covers. Influences range from The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, Tina Turner and Ella Fitzgerald to Fleetwood Mac, Imelda May, Bonnie Raitt, Carole King and many more.
This Sligo/Leitrim based band, features the powerful vocal lead and harmony singing of Anne Brennan and the Gallagher sisters, Jane and Maev, slickly backed by Nick Dimes on keyboards, John Ryan on percussion & Paul Wilson on bass.
Red Queen Contest
Lurking somewhere in the realm of alternative rock, Red Queen Contest is
a dual fronted powerful four-piece with soaring harmonies, gritty guitars and an almighty rhythm section.
Four friends from Navan, Red Queen Contest came together in 2010. With an instant spark, batches of songs were hatched documenting the band’s take on life. From the introspective to the satirical, the band’s songs are threaded together by common colours of wit and melody.
